The Day After Boxing Day

Morning Mum,

‘Morning Love.’

It’s that funny old day again today, you know, December the 27th, the one after Boxing Day, the day before Charl’s Birthday, 2 days before our Grace’s and 3 before mine.

It’s 4 days before New Year’s Eve and 5 before New Years Day.

‘It is Love you’re right.’

It’s always felt like a strange in between and pretty insignificant day to me. Yesterday Frankie asked, ‘What are we doing tomorrow Mum?’

‘Tidying up.’ Came her answer.  She wasn’t happy about that.

‘Awww, that’s boring.’ She huffed.

Today’s date on the calendar may not really resonate in our world but in the big wide world, the 27th, like every other day of the year is in fact incredibly significant and so I’ve decided to stop writing it off.

Did you know, on 27th December in 1850 The Hawaiian Fire Department was established?

‘I didn’t Love, no.’

Or in 1932 Radio City Music Hall opened in New York City?

‘No I didn’t know that either.’

In 2004, radiation from an explosion on the magnetar SGR 1806-20 reached Earth and in 2019, an American couple got married at their local Dunkin’ Donuts after breaking up their relationship at the same Dunkin’ Donuts 25 years earlier.

‘Have you just googled all this Love?’

Yes Mum, how did you know?

‘Well, the explosion on the magnetar was the brightest stellar event ever recorded, with a flash of light so powerful that it bounced off the Moon and lit up the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Wow!!!

‘The radiation from the starquake explosion actually took 50,000 years to reach Earth.’

Oh my God, Mum that is amazing, how did you know that?  Did God tell you?

‘No Love, I just googled it.’

Awww look at us googling together these days, you up there, me down here, normally you would have said something along the lines of… ‘Hey, get your thingy up on your computer will you and see if you can find this wotsit out for me…’

Do you know what Mum?

‘What’s that Love?’

I’ve decided that from now on, the 27th of December is going to become a hugely significant day.

‘Is it, why?’

It’s another whole day I get to spend with my beautiful eleven year old daughter.

This time next year she’ll be twelve and a half and I’ll never get this 24 hours back with her again will I?

I’m not saying we are going to do anything especially exciting, I mean tidying up isn’t as much fun as being chased around the garden in an inflatable Santa suit or watching back to back Christmas movies and tucking into a tub of Quality Street.  …but at least we will be together.

She’ll be back at school again before you know it and everything will be full on again.

‘That’s very true Love, don’t wish away the hours, the weeks, the months, they’re all significant.

‘Always remember Queen, the most precious thing you have is time.’

I wish I could have had more time with you Mum.

‘I know you do Love, but look at us now, we’re still talking aren’t we?’

Yeah but some people might think I’m talking to myself.

‘Don’t worry about what other people might think my Love, you do what makes you happy, I know one thing, you writing to me like this makes me very happy.’

Does it Mum?  I’m glad about that.

Can you see me holding this picture that Frankie gave to me one Christmas?

At first I thought she was a child genius being able to spell and cross stitch at only 5 years old.  But I soon realised that you had ordered it for me on her behalf and that it was in fact you telling me I was doing a good job.

That meant the world to me, to read those words, the words you chose for her to say to me.

Thank you Mum.

‘You’re welcome Love, anyway go on now, you get off, go and spend time tidying up and putting things away with that gorgeous girl of yours.’

Ok Mum, I will, speak soon.

Love as always,

Queen x
